Songs from Behind the Curtain

an opera

CLICK HERE TO RETURN TO THE SONGS FROM BEHIND THE CURTAIN MAIN PAGE!

As I work on Songs from Behind the Curtain, I am going to try and keep posting drafts and MIDI so that people can listen to the opera, follow it's progress and the editing process, as well as give feedback. Please send me an email with your thoughts...

10/20/2010 - The first act is done. You can check out the score below (it is optimized, but not clean, as I don't want to waste the time since it will be revised...)

11/4/2010 - The first and third scenes of Act II are completed and you can listen to them. I'll put up the entire score for Act II when it is done. Hopefully by Thanksgiving.

2/6/2011 - I have been slowly digesting all the work I've done and am going to revise a little and write more this month. Check to the right for upcoming performances of scenes and sections!

4/2/2011 - All the files have been updated to represent the latest versions. The Prologue has been removed and will be rewritten once more of the opera is finished. The libretto is also drastically cut from previous versions. I think the final opera should come in around 2.5 hours, but more cuts might still be needed. Also, the MIDI for Orphée Redux can be found in the player.

5/12/2011 - Further cuts to the libretto as well as more completed scenes. I can't believe it, but I think I'm only three scenes away from completing the opera. Another good sign is that as I'm revising and tightening scenes the entire work continues to become even more focused and is getting better. Enjoy!

5/15/2011 - The first scene of Act III is now also done. This just leaves two scenes, Act II scene 5 and Act III scene 5 before the first draft is completed. Probably only 20 minutes or less of music left to write!

8/8/2011 - The entire opera is done...well, at least the first draft. You can listen to the entire MIDI to the right, and I'll keep posting and updating as scenes are revised. I'm hoping to defend in November, so that would mean this needs to be done by then, so now it's time to get to work...

9/14/2011 - Lots of revisions so far. I combined, cut, and reworked various parts and have reduced the number of scenes per act. But that's really true on paper, because they were attacca anyway...But the mp3s up are current as of today (so they'll be changing tonight or tomorrow...) and I'm really starting to see the final work. The hard part is still cutting a little more, and I am mostly left with music I do not want to part with, so it's not the worst situation to be in, but still, cuts must be made. The scores are also updated, so you can see the latest drafts as well (they are all still very messy, but in a better setup)

9/21/2011 - A second draft is complete! Once agan, the MIDI has been updated and the scores as well. As of this date, everything but the libretto is current (although still messy, but that's next!)

10/24/2011 - It is done! I will be defending the work on Dec. 3rd, but the score and everything is done (or at least it is for the moment until my committee gets their hands on it. All the links below should be to the actual document and all the MIDI to the right is current. For the moment I have uploaded the actual dissertation file, so some of the fonts might look a bit boring, but that's what they want...Anyway, enjoy!

1/22/2012 - A final update. I successfully defended my dissertation and have a completed and final copy of Songs. If you are interested in performing or workshopping all or part of it please contact me for more information. Thanks to everyone who helped me complete this mammoth project (I began the novel in 2008 and completed the music in 2011).
