Three Harlem Songs
for tenor, flute, violoncello and piano
Duration - app. 12 minutes
Program Notes:
Three Harlem Songs is a set of pieces based on the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance poet Claude McKay (1889-1948). In setting the text, I chose to use a jazz style and language in order to express other artistic facets of the Harlem Renaissance. The result, although explicitly notated, should sound improvised and reactionary, like good jazz.
This piece has not been performed or read.
