Sketches in Soft Light
for orchestra
Duration - approx. 7 min.
Program Notes:
Sketches in Soft Light was written upon request for Sophia Tegart and Mary Doornink. The main theme in Sketches is based on a theme from an earlier work for flute and piano entitled Portrait of the Artist. The original chamber version for flute, violoncello, and piano was completed in November of 2003, and premiered in January of 2004.
The orchestra version of Sketches in Soft Light was completed in November of 2005. The project was undertaken to create a short orchestra work that was drastically different from previous pieces for orchestra. As a result, Sketches in Soft Light is a very impressionistic painting of a folk-like tune.
